BASKET HNISH.

This beautiful finish, somewhat resembling a braided whip handle, is a distinguishing finish of the Navajo and Paiute Indians, although we find many-Apache baskets finished in the same manner. However, collectors have proven beyond a doubt that this weave originated with the Navajo weavers.

This substantial and really beautiful finish is given the basket after the last row of weaving has been completed. That is, the reed has been cut off, and trimmed down to a flat point, and covered with weaving, the weaving thread being fastened in securely, and cut off.
